Curry Village, Yosemite National Park

The cabin in the isometric cutaway is one of several of its kind located in Curry Village, Yosemite National Park. Its design is interesting as it was built using light dimensional lumber, but it has more in common with heavy timber framing. Notice that there are no studs, only tongue and groove paneling that fits into rabbets in the posts, sill, and plate. The tongue and groove paneling contributes structurally as a load bearing component and acts as the interior and exterior finish. It's a clever design that requires only simple joinery. One drawback is that the design isn't easily insulated.

The second drawing is a section of Yosemite Valley I made in AutoCAD Civil 3D using aerial LIDAR made available by the Park. The light gray image of Half Dome is a triangulated surface generated from the 3D aerial scan. The drawing shows the extent of the "Rock Fall Zone," a section of Curry Village that is vulnerable to rock fall.
